The Instructors
Jeff Bagwell
Jeff Bagwell was drafted in 1989 by the Boston Red Sox. In what is referred to as one of the most lopsided trades of all time, Bagwell was traded to the Houston Astros in 1990 for Larry Anderson. The rest is history. Jeff Bagwell went on to become one of the best Houston Astros and First-Basemen of all-time and is a future hall of famer. In his 15 year career, all with the Astros, Bagwell compiled a career batting average of .297, hit 449 home runs and had 1,529 RBI's. He was named Rookie of the Year in 1991 and his best season came in 1994 when he was named the National League MVP (an award he finished in the top 10 in voting 6 times during his career). He was a 4x All-Star, won a Gold Glove and 4 Silver Sluggers at first base. The Astros retired his number (5) in 2007, the same year he retired. In 2011, the first year he became eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame, he received 41.7 percent of the votes.
Davey Johnson
Davey has been successful in Major League Baseball as a player and manager ever since he played his first MLB game in 1965. Over his 13 season playing career, Johnson was with the Orioles, Braves, Phillies, and Cubs along with 2 seasons in the Japanese League. In all, Davey posted impressive numbers with a .261 batting average, 136 home runs, 609 RBI's, 564 runs. What is more remarkable is Mr. Johnson played in 1435 games and won two World Series Championships as a member of the Orioles 1966, and 1970. Davey also holds the record for most home runs by a second baseman in a single season with 42.
From a managing standpoint, he has led the Mets, Reds, Orioles, Dodgers and even team USA in the World Baseball Classic. Furthermore, Davey achieved a World Series Championship with the 1986 Mets. In 2009 and 2010, Davey managed in the Florida League for the Deland Suns and Sanford River Rats. Davey is currently the Manager of the Washington Nationals.
Hunter Pence
After a collegiate career at the University of Texas at Arlington, Pence was drafted in 2004 during the second round by the Houston Astros. He was very successful in their minor league system and on April 28, 2007 Pence got his big league call up. In 2009 Pence had a stellar year and was named to the National League All-Star Team. In 2011, Pence was traded mid-season from the Houston Astros to his current team, the Philadelphia Phillies. He played in 154 games, batting .314, with 22 home runs, and a career high in RBI's with 97. In just 5 years, Pence has compiled a career batting average of .292, with 114 home runs and 412 RBI's.
