Most professional baseball players spend their off-season taking batting and fielding practice, throwing bullpens or conditioning. Those who retired might choose to coach, raise a family, try their luck in the broadcast booth or simply live the "normal" life away from the spotlight. For two days in November, 25 active and retired Major League Baseball Players will travel to Winter Park to show their support for the Florida Collegiate Summer League to play in the 3rd Annual Florida League Celebrity Golf Tournament.
This one of a kind event supports the Florida Collegiate Summer League, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The event has grown into a baseball lover’s paradise with unfiltered access to big name baseball celebrities. Participants are invited to a pairings dinner on November 14 where they find out and get introduced to the celebrity they will tee off with. November 15 is a full day of golf and fine dining at one of the most exclusive courses in the Central Florida area – Interlachen Country Club.
A few attendees include Davey Johnson, Gary Carter, Tim Wakefield, Tim Raines Sr., Frank Viola, Fred McGriff, Zach Greinke, Ben Zobrist, Hunter Pence, Ray Lankford, Jon Niese, Ozzie Smith, Vince Coleman, Dan Uggla, Jack Billingham and more.
"The neatest thing about this event, from a celebrity perspective, is the exclusivity of it" said Davey Johnson. "I really enjoy getting to know the people who attend this event each year. I enjoy sharing my perspective on the experiences I had in my professional career with those who only know what they see of me on TV. It is a first-class event that is the best of its’ kind".
Attendees also have a chance to take home some great prizes from the silent auction as well as competitions on the golf course. Prizes range from a cruise, vacation packages or a wine-dinner at Del Friscos to sports memorabilia and merchandise that the stars will sign on the spot.
"We are especially excited about this year’s tournament" said Tournament Director, Kevin Davidson, a UBS Wealth Strategist. "Word about this event is spreading like wildfire, and it is really neat to see the positive response from the celebrities as well as participants. The Florida League does so much for college baseball players as well as our local Central Florida Community. It is a pleasure working this event and helping raise needed money for the league’s cause."
No more than 25 foursomes are permitted to participate in the tournament and with 19 foursomes already booked, only 3 openings remain. To register, or for more information, please contact Rob Sitz (RSitz@FloridaLeague.com) or call the Florida League office at (321)206-9174.
The Florida Collegiate Summer League was founded in 2003 to provide a place in Florida for college baseball players to hone their wood bat skills against top-level competition in a festive community environment. FCSL is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, dependent upon donation from individuals, businesses and foundations in each team’s hometown.
