Diamond Dawgs Defeat River Rats Behind Balanced Attack
WINTER PARK, Fla. — The Winter Park Diamond Dawgs continued their strong start to the season Monday night, defeating the Sanford River Rats 5-2 at Alfond Stadium to improve to 6-3 on the year. Sanford dropped to 1-6.
After two scoreless innings, Winter Park broke through in the bottom of the third. Roberto Odor got the offense started with an RBI single that scored Justus Mike. Moments later, Jake Biaggi delivered the biggest hit of the night, ripping a two-run double to left field to bring home Odor and Osmin Melendez for a 3-0 lead.
The Diamond Dawgs added to their advantage in the fifth inning when Houston Hosford singled up the middle to score Mike. An inning later, Winter Park capitalized on a Sanford error, allowing Skyler Jersey to score and extend the lead to 5-0.
Winter Park's pitching staff was dominant throughout the evening. Starter Tyler Mecchella allowed just one hit over four scoreless innings before turning the ball over to Benjamin Filler, who earned the victory with two shutout innings of relief. Anthony Filice and Cameron Hanes combined to close out the game, with Hanes recording the save.
Together, the Diamond Dawgs' pitchers limited the River Rats to three hits and two runs.
At the plate, Mike led the way with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, scoring twice and stealing two bases. Biaggi finished with two hits and two RBIs, while Jersey added two hits and a run scored. Winter Park collected 12 hits and consistently pressured Sanford throughout the night.
The River Rats mounted a late rally in the seventh inning when AJ Seymour delivered a two-run double, but the Diamond Dawgs bullpen quickly shut the door to secure the victory.
Winter Park returns to action Tuesday with a road matchup against the Winter Garden Squeeze at 6 p.m. at Horizon High School. The teams last met June 1, when the Diamond Dawgs earned a walk-off victory on a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning.
