Fifth Inning Sinks Dawgs in Home Loss
WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Winter Park Diamond Dawgs couldn't overcome a three-run fifth inning on Tuesday night, falling 3-1 to the Orlando Snappers at Alfond Stadium.
For the first four innings, both teams were locked in a scoreless duel. The Dawgs showcased strong pitching throughout the night, limiting the Snappers to just five hits. However, Orlando capitalized on its biggest scoring opportunity in the fifth inning to take control of the game.
The Snappers broke through when Ty Kennedy scored on a fielder's choice by Santiago Busot. Shortly afterward, Roy Rodriguez delivered a two-run single to center field, scoring Busot and Angel Gabriel Mendoza Brand and extending Orlando's lead to 3-0.
Winter Park responded in the bottom of the sixth inning. Catcher Carson Balls reached base and later scored when Jacob Pearl lined an RBI single into right-center field. An error on the play allowed Pearl to advance to second, cutting the deficit to 3-1 and giving the Dawgs life.
That was as close as Winter Park would get. Orlando's bullpen closed out the final three innings without allowing a run. Ryland Happel earned the win after pitching 5 1/3 innings of relief, allowing one run on five hits. Roberto Alvarez recorded the save with a scoreless ninth inning.
Despite the defeat, the Diamond Dawgs matched Orlando with five hits. Pearl, Evan Taveras, Ethan Zagers, Clay Mitchell and Carson Balls each recorded a hit. Pearl drove in the team's lone run, while Balls scored it.
Winter Park's pitching staff delivered another solid performance. Anthony Filice opened the game with three scoreless innings before Tristan Lopez was charged with the loss after allowing three runs in two innings. Knute Rockey and Kaiden Perez combined for four scoreless innings out of the bullpen to keep the Dawgs within striking distance.
The loss dropped Winter Park to 2-3 on the season, while Orlando improved to 3-1. The Diamond Dawgs will look to bounce back Thursday when they host the DeLand Suns at Alfond Stadium.
