Diamond Dawgs Fall in Extras Despite Strong Pitching Effort
WINTER PARK, Fla. — The Winter Park Diamond Dawgs battled back from a three-run deficit but ultimately fell 5-4 to the Winter Garden Squeeze in 10 innings Monday night at Alfond Stadium.
The loss was a frustrating one for the Dawgs, who limited the Squeeze to just two earned runs despite committing four defensive errors.
Winter Garden took an early lead with unearned runs in the second, third and fifth innings, capitalizing on defensive miscues to build a 3-0 advantage. Meanwhile, Winter Park's pitching staff kept the game within reach all night. Tyler Mecchella, Anthony Filice, Ty Uchman and Tripp Rosenberger combined to allow just seven hits over 10 innings.
The Dawgs finally broke through in the seventh when Carson Balls drew an RBI walk to score Osmin Melendez. An inning later, Ethan Zagers delivered the biggest hit of the night, lining a two-run single to center field that scored Garrett Frost and Roberto Odor to tie the game at 3-3.
After both teams were held scoreless in the ninth, the Squeeze regained the lead in the 10th on a two-run double by Alexander Galan. Both runs were unearned following another defensive miscue.
Winter Park answered in the bottom half of the inning when Frost singled home Odor, but the rally came up one run short.
Odor scored twice for the Dawgs, while Frost, Ethan Koller, Nikola Mezzanotte and Zagers each contributed a hit. Despite the loss, the pitching staff's ability to hold Winter Garden to just two earned runs highlighted a strong effort on the mound. The four defensive errors, however, proved costly as three of the Squeeze's five runs were unearned in the extra-inning defeat.
The Diamond Dawgs return to action Tuesday when they travel to face the Winter Garden Squeeze at Horizon High School. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
