Early Hole Too Much for DeLand in Loss to Sanford
DELAND, Fla. — The Sanford River Rats defeated the DeLand Suns 6-2 on Tuesday night, handing DeLand its seventh loss of the season.
The River Rats got on the board first when Jake Schincariol (Florida Southern) launched a solo home run to right field in the third inning. Sanford added four more runs in the fifth to extend its lead to 5-0.
DeLand scored its only runs of the evening in the sixth inning, capitalizing on a leadoff single and a walk to the second batter of the frame. With one out, Shane Thomas (Undecided) singled to left field, scoring Torin Foley (Embry-Riddle). A few batters later, with two outs, Josh Vinciguerra (Undecided) hit an infield single that scored Trey Seluk (Undecided).
Thomas attempted to score on the play but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
Sanford added an insurance run in the seventh inning to cap the 6-2 victory.
The Suns utilized four pitchers in the loss. Jackson Clark (Navy) worked the first three innings, allowing one run and taking the loss. Jacob Thomas (University of North Florida) followed with two innings of relief, surrendering four runs. Nic Delucia (Daytona State) tossed a scoreless inning before Ryan Kelley (Rollins) closed out the game, allowing one run over three innings.
With the loss, the DeLand Suns fell to 5-7, while the Sanford River Rats improved to 3-10.
The Suns return to action Wednesday against the River Rats. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Conrad Park.
