Orlando Snappers
ORLANDO, Fla. - The Orlando Snappers split a doubleheader against the DeLand Suns on Monday night, earning a comeback win in Game 2 after dropping the opener. The day featured an 8-4 Suns victory followed by a 6-2 Snappers win, moving Orlando to 9-7-1 on the season while DeLand fell to 7-9.
Game 1
Game 1 resumed in the fourth inning as the completion of a suspended contest from Friday, with the Snappers holding a 3-2 lead and one runner on with one out.
DeLand quickly erased the advantage and took control as the game progressed, pulling away for an 8-4 victory. The Suns' Couper Gatch delivered a strong relief outing that helped shut down the Orlando offense and swing momentum fully in DeLand's favor.
Orlando struggled to generate consistent energy offensively and was unable to recover after surrendering the lead, as the Suns controlled the remainder of the game.
Game 2
Game 2 was a stark contrast, as pitching dominated early and offense was nearly nonexistent for most of the night.
Orlando starter Christian Helmers was excellent, tossing five scoreless innings while working around three defensive errors behind him. He turned in his second straight strong outing, keeping the Snappers in the game despite repeated traffic on the bases.
Ryon Smith followed with four innings of relief, allowing no earned runs, though two unearned runs scored after a fourth defensive error kept DeLand within striking distance.
The Snappers offense remained quiet for seven innings before erupting in the eighth. Down 2-0 and having recorded just two hits to that point, Orlando strung together a rally as six of the next seven batters reached base, including two walks and three hit-by-pitches, loading the bases with two outs.
Logan Chalk then delivered the biggest swing of the night, crushing a bases-clearing double to left field to give Orlando its first lead. He later scored on consecutive balks, extending the advantage as the Snappers completed a 6-2 comeback victory.
After 13 quiet innings at the plate across the day, Orlando's offense broke through in the 14th inning to salvage the split.
The Snappers return home Tuesday to face the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs at The First Academy. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
