Machado Shoves, Chalk Rakes as Snappers Blank River Rats
ORLANDO, Fla. - The Orlando Snappers turned in their most complete performance of the 2026 season Tuesday night, breaking the game open with an eight-run third inning while Luis Machado threw a complete-game shutout in an 8-0 victory over the Sanford River Rats.
With the final week of the regular season underway, every game carries added significance. Just two games separate sixth place from second place in the Florida Collegiate Summer League standings, making each victory critical for playoff positioning. Tuesday's win was especially important for Orlando with a three-game series against the league-leading Leesburg Lightning looming this weekend.
Making just his third start of the season, Machado dominated from start to finish. The two-way standout tossed the first complete game and shutout by a Snappers pitcher this season, allowing just five baserunners over seven scoreless innings in the run-rule victory. His performance lifted Orlando into a tie for second place in the standings.
Machado's season has been anything but smooth. He has battled a nagging hamstring injury, seen limited opportunities at the plate and dealt with uncertainty surrounding his college future. Tuesday's outing was the latest reward for the work he has consistently put in behind the scenes.
Before each game, whether starting or not, Machado can often be found sitting quietly in the dugout, staring toward the field. "This is my peace," Machado said while watching the diamond. His discipline and work ethic have become defining traits, and his recent success reflects that commitment.
The Snappers' offense provided all the support Machado needed with an explosive third inning. Orlando sent 14 batters to the plate and scored all eight of its runs in the frame. The biggest swing came from Logan Chalk, who launched a two-run home run to left-center field. Chalk, who hit Orlando's first home run of the season during opening week, now has two long balls this summer.
The victory was Orlando's second straight, marking the first time the Snappers have won consecutive games since June 12-13. They improved to 13-14-2 and will look to continue their climb up the standings Wednesday with a pseudo-doubleheader at The First Academy.
Orlando will first resume its suspended game against the Winter Garden Squeeze from July 3 before taking on the DeLand Suns in a scheduled nine-inning contest. The suspended game resumes at 4:30 p.m.
